Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and your business
“Believe me, my young friend, there really is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” Kenneth Grahame
I spent three glorious days working with a company in Cork a couple of weeks ago on their environmental management system and stayed in a hotel in a place called Carrigaline, a few kms from Crosshaven, where Cork Yacht Club is located. A beautiful part of the world indeed, as a friend of my commented at the time.
Crosshaven is a well-known sailing location and it was a joy to look at the many boats of all vintages in the extensive boat parks. Nowadays sailing is no longer the preserve of those with a lot of money, there boats are sailed, and race competitively, that are many years old. Many of these cost hundreds, rather than thousands of pounds. It is a world where the practice of ‘Reuse’ has been ‘en vogue’ for many years.
This joyous moment almost got me in the mood for getting my boat back in the water. Almost.
Instead I ran along the river each night of my stay, on what was a converted railway track (complete with original reconditioned signals and platforms to add a touch of colour). This addition of the old really added to the atmosphere of the surroundings.
Similarly, an organization that I was with recently in Scotland had had a major renovation of their facility, and in line with their environmental policy (and their purpose and strategy – of manufacturing furniture), they had themselves renovated all their office furniture rather than replace it with new. The furniture looked fantastic, and as well as a sales pitch to potential customers, this also represented a significant cost saving in the re-build project of their facility.
What you can think of that is in line with your business purpose and strategy, and environmental policy, that could be implemented to help increase sales, demonstrate your environmental credentials (and save you money at the same time)? # ReduceReuseRecycle
